Saskatoon Snowstorm Forecast December 15, 2006 - This is my forecast at 3pm SST. The radar may be showing some intensification and so we may actually get a lot more snow as this powerful system shows its strength in the evening hours over Saskatoon.
The warnings have been canceled for now but we still might get 5 to 10 cm of snow this evening.

Don't forget November
Here is a teaser video before the second season takes the "geezer media" by surprise again. This video is from May 2005 but November has always been active across much of the southern tornado belt so, WAKE UP CHASERS!

No Tornado Evidence
Tornadoes have been reported on CBC, CKOM and Saskatoonhomepage.ca but so far no evidence has been submited. We drove all around that storm for many hours and saw nothing more than pea size hail that lasted for no more than 3 seconds. No damage from Foam Lake to Buchanan to Springside. We saw some good looking clouds but again got fooled into following it going north while there may have been a south-east moving storm that got away on us. When we gave up and started moving south towards Good Spirit Lake, we expected all the lightning to come right over us but we never even caught up to it. Weather radio kicked in too late to tell us what we missed. Photos will be posted later.

Saskatchewan Moderate Risk Today
Here is an incredible collection of the major hail storm around Red Deer, Alberta last night.
Red Deer
This stuff is now over Yorkton for their second major storm in 24hrs. We are going to try and chase what we can from Saskatoon today, maybe we will end up in Dauphin, Manitoba as it seems to be heading that way very slowly, NE@20km/hr. OR the Regina area is supposed to be wild later today.

Friday Severe Weather Outbreak in Saskatchewan
Sounds like something big is brewing for tommorrow. Right now we have storms in southern Alberta moving into western Saskatchewan tonight, and another cluster of big cells in south-east Saskatchewan moving in to Manitoba. I haven't had much time to look at the forecast for Friday but the buzz is on... look here:

Manitoba Tornado Disaster
Several tornadoes have been reported to have destroyed lake areas north of Winnipeg on Saturday. Information is slow to come in but photos of the twisters have been posted on CBC and CTV. Injury (dozens) and damage numbers have been increasing as the day goes on but at least one person is dead another is in critical condition and the damage photos are disturbing. This storm was predicted two days ahead of time with a high risk issued at 11am on Saturday for the area by saskatoonscanner.com. Video from the storm when it hit Saskatoon on Friday will be posted this afternoon. The weather is expected to be clear for the next few days on the Canadian prairies while central Ontario in eastern Canada is under another high to moderate risk for severe weather. This already deadly system is moving towards central Quebec for Sunday night and Monday.

Photos from today's storms
About an hour north-west of Saskatoon, somewhere near Arelee or Eagle Creek, we followed a pretty surprisingly interesting storm. With the report from Environment Canada about large hail in this system, and a diamond shape on radar with right-turning action in the middle, it was hard to pass up. The first photos show where we thought we saw a tornado although it was very far away. We had a great view but not many roads to choose from to get any closer. We are facing west here and Biggar is most likely somewhere on the other side of the hill and behind the clouds.
We tried to go back south and west, ending up near Perdue, then Laura where it got away on us and we got wrapped in rain and headed home.
Video may be posted later, depending on the quality (it's not great).

Today's Forecast: Widespread Action
From Edmonton and Red Deer, through Saskatoon and Regina even Winnipeg is at risk from severe weather today. It looks like Edmonton will get lots of rain while thunderstorms are going to cover the rest of the area. Extreme southern Saskatchewan is at 35C. We are monitoring the situation closely.
Fast Moving Storm Hits Saskatoon
I personally saw some hail about the size of a dime, intense lightning and heavy downpours on 33rd Street and Confederation Drive. Not much wind if any. Looking at the video now...
Note: this storm was moving at 70km per hour north east and more storms are possible tonight.

Video from yesterday's storms...
The video from yesterday's storms in central Saskatchewan will be posted later today. There wasn't much lightning but the rolling wall cloud looks incredible with aqua green clouds behind it. The photo in the previous post shows the cloud that eventually was responsible for the piles of hail and that sign that got destroyed. The storm damage was only about one kilometre south of where we were taking all the photos and video. As soon as the thing came over our heads it wrapped around us and we went back to the highway to find cars stopped on the side of the road due to visibilty (along with the damage). It was pretty scary for a few minutes there!
Storm Chase Summary Today
Marble size hail piled up on the side of the road and a big sign got destroyed by something outside of McDowall, Saskatchewan, which is about 30km south of Prince Albert. This storm had some very wild features with wall clouds and pretty fast rotation. After it burped this out at about 6pm, it went south-east and re-organized and we found a bit more hail on the road towards Melfort but that was pretty much it.
Alberta Rainbow
Here's is a shot of the rainbow we saw along the Alberta/Saskatchewan border on Tuesday evening. We didn't see any hail but there was some pretty intense lightning every minute or so. Moderate to heavy rain and some wind gusts that brought some tree branches onto the highway around Biggar later at night. This system should be pretty powerful tommorrow as it is dropping a lot of rain in western Saskatchewan right now. Saskatoon might get a downpour with lightning over the next few hours, overnight.

Forecast Today
The outlook map will be updated later today. For now, it looks like some small cells are popping up west of Saskatoon but the biggest risk area will be in the heat of Manitoba.
Intense Lightning: North of Moose Jaw
I am exhausted from another long chase day. Just got back and I had to post at least one shot. Tons of video to go through again which I will post tommorrow. Its all lightning with this storm. No hail and even the rain wasn't that heavy. The best lightning shots of the year if not ever came out of what seemed like a very slow or even stationary storm.
More Photos From Monday's Storm
Here is a few more photos from Monday's storm. The first one is from north of Rosetown, where we changed direction and headed back through Rosetown to follow the shelf. I've just gone through a bunch of video clips and found a few good lightning bursts. Too bad no stills but the video is gonna be very entertaining once I have it produced. It should be online by Tuesday night.
Alberta: 6cm Hail, Tornado Watch In Effect
Calgary saw the beginings of an incredible storm today. Here is a site with some great photos and weather information from Calgary: wx.ca
Environment Canada reported 6cm hail with these storms that headed out of the Calgary area towards Drumheller which is now under a tornado watch. The cells seem to have split at this time and severe thunderstorm watches have been extended into western Saskatchewan. This system is moving quickly north-east, possibly even skipping on radar. With a forecast of some very high temperatures around Saskatoon on Monday, this tends to suggest that these storms will be nocturnal (look at the moon). We could see these storms increase in strength after the sun goes down. This system must be watched closely. Check CanadianPrairieStorms Yahoo group for more...

What a Friday!
Just got back from work to upload some photos from this afternoon. Gunjan and I took a trip srtaight for Radisson and caught a brief tornado that had a dust column going all the way up to the base of the clouds for about 30 seconds. I got a couple of crappy shots while driving but Gunjan should be posting his photos sometime soon I hope. He has some decent shots of it. Other than that tornado which was south of Radisson, we got hit with whitout conditions and some marble size hail. Before that we were under some of the most amazing cloud displays of the year. Aqua Green! I have some video that I will post later and tons of photos to go through. Here is a couple more photos:

Saskatchewan Storm Chase
Looking at the radar, west of Saskatoon there could be chance to see a nice thunderstorm this afternoon. With cells filling out the area from Meadow Lake all the way down to Kindersley, something might pop-up somewhere in the middle. Biggar, SK. is always a fun target. Then either back east or north-east.

Manitoba Watch Out!
A huge area of rain over southern Saskatchewan has moved into southern Manitoba where temperatures are up to 30 degrees already. This system is turning nasty as it convects from Brandon, north to Dauphin. Warnings have been issued and it has just started! We are going to upgrade the risk map now...
Saskatoon - Smoky and Muggy - No Storms Yet...
We have some very warm, muggy air now to go with forest fire smoke. There is a pretty good chance of severe thunderstorms today in central Saskatchewan but so far storms have gone much further north-east. Still, with a cold front due to pass through here as the sun goes down, storms could come out of nowhere. Conditions are just about perfect with a nice steady wind to help it all out. I took a short drive out towards Rosthurn and found a kilometre wide swath of rain around 3:30pm. It now appears to be building up big with warnings for the Nipiwin area. Dewpoints are 22 in Nipiwin and 20 in Saskatoon. Echo tops are now reaching 50 000 feet high. That is nearly maxed. As the sun goes down that monster could back-build in a hurry.
Here are some early photos:
Here are some early photos:

2.5 CM Hail in Southern Saskatchewan Storm This Morning
Major storms have developed north and south of the International border. Hail of 2.5 cm was reported by Environment Canada, prompting many new watches and warnings by noon. Theses storms are heading north and may affect major cities later this afternoon and evening.
Severe Weather is Back!
Numerous reports of tornadoes with the storms in Montana according to NWS. Moving north into Alberta, Environment Canada issued tornado warnings at around 10 pm for southernmost parts of Alberta. These storms are expected to continue through the night and move into western Saskatchewan by Wednesday evening.

Storms Today - Central Saskatchewan - Southern Ontario
Two places of interest today. Central Saskatchewan and southern Ontario should get an honorable mention. The huge storms that finally left Manitoba yesterday are now re-organizing in the same hot air just further south and intesified by the surrounding lakes. However, as usual with Ontario storms, the wind shear is not as good there and with all the trees and buildings, it has to be some of the worst areas to chase storms in Canada. Back in Saskatchewan however, our skies are cooking up right now and my cam shows the soupy looking clouds in the north with layers and really nice convective (pop-corn) clouds forming all over the place. I think we actually have way too much moisture and unless it clears out and heats up, storms will be mild out here today. Ontario is going to see some major light shows tonight though.
Nice Gradient in Southern Manitoba
It is 29C in south-east Manitoba, Winnipeg is 22C, Cypress Hills, Saskatchewan is only 6C !! Seems like a good chance of a monster storm to develop somewhere but it looks like that is much further south. Storms will likely develop somewhere along the International border.

New Template for Canadian Prairie Storms
Finally got around to fixing up the template on this blog. It might have to do with the numbers of visitors to this blog doubling and tripling in the last two days. Storms are everywhere around us right now. Nice and calm in Saskatoon but it looks like Regina is going to get another light show. Watches have been up all around Saskatoon but not the city itself, yet. "Muggy" is the most popular word in Saskatoon today!

Possible Severe Weather Outbreak - Alberta Saturday
SATURDAY FORECAST: TORNADOES AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS ALBERTA
SUNDAY AND MONDAY: STUFF MOVES EAST
The Prairie Storm Prediction Centre has mentioned the possibility of a "severe weather outbreak" on Saturday in Alberta. This should not be taken lightly as it is the month of May and the states are very quiet for this time of year. It is not unusual to have over a hundred tornado reports in a single day in the states at this time of the year. Most importantly, this year, March and April produced more tornadoes than May which IS unusual. Is the weather skipping a month? If so, June/July weather is already here!

Nice Day Today
Warm temperatures are giving Alberta and Manitoba an early taste of summer. The usual hotspots are in the low thirties with Drumheller checking in at 32C. Highest dewpoints are at North Battleford, Meadow Lake and Spiritwood. Humidities are a bit low but capes appear to be reaching 2000. Seems to be some light wind shear as well. Definitely worth watching.
Severe Weather Outlook Map for the Canadian Prairies
The map has been fixed up a bit as we get closer to seeing some real storms around here. There is some convecting clouds to the west of Saskatoon but we are not expecting too much severe weather until it heats up a bit more.

After Easter Thoughts
Just to let everyone know, some new stuff has been added to saskatoonscanner.com including photos of the flood, the sunset and the changing sky. Also, the severe weather outlook map for the Canadian prairies has been recently re-built. There are a few bugs to work out and it will be vastly improved before the summer storm season really hits. Look forward to seeing more animated icons and some real juicy, highly secretive, utterly amazing, and possibly shocking features. Oh, and by the way, those photos can be found at saskatoonscanner.com/features/
As for the weather today, more rain, more rain. Flooding sucks and there are plenty of people affected this spring. Thunderstorms are possible in southern areas today but updating the map is going to have to wait until later.
In the United States, the tornado reports are coming in a steady pace in 2006. If April ends up with over 300 tornado reports, then it would be my guess that May will not be nearly as busy as last year. The storms seem to be moving north faster than normal so this seems to suggest a shortened storm chasing season in the states and an earlier one in Canada. This may be a bold prediction but the month of May could bring the most tornadoes Canada has seen ever in that month. Keep in mind that will be due mostly in part to the huge and growing numbers of digital cameras out there. Hopefully we can all use this fantasic technology to understand the weather a little better, before things get really crazy.
notes:
-COD has updated their site with a Canadian section.
-Stormtrack forums are spitting out new tornado photos and chase blogs every day.

Windy in Saskatoon
Winds are now gusting to over 60km/hr here in Saskatoon causing some ust to get kicked up into the air. Thunderstorms are a possibility today east of us.
It's getting closer!
Today there is a slight risk of severe weather in the states of Montana and South Dakota, bringing the storm season a bit closer to Canada for 2006. Thursday makes for another big day to watch as a moderate risk has been issued for areas further south and east. Our storm prediction map will have to get back into operation very soon as the snow is nearly all gone here in Saskatoon. Some general thundershowers are possible today in extreme southern Alberta.
Tornado Numbers See Huge Increase
Monthly tornado statistics are a bit disturbing so far this year. After this past Sunday's numbers have been tabulated, the month of March claimed over 200 tornadoes. Is this due to more chasers, more media, or is the weather going bonkers. What are we to prepare for this summer in Canada? It is not uncommon to have one or two isolated but powerful storms in the month of April somewhere in Saskatchewan, but maybe this year we will see summer type action starting very early.

PDS ISSUED: Strong Tornadoes Possible Today
The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma today has issued a "PDS" or particularly dangerous situation. The Stormtrack.org forums are buzzing with activity and it looks like it is going to be a busy day for storms on the plains. So far only hail has been reported but shear is very strong and violent tornadoes are expected this afternoon in eastern Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Missori.

Weather on the Canadian prairies is mixed with a heavy snowfall warning in west-central Manitoba and warm temperatures for the rest of us.

Severe Weather Today In Tornado Alley
A moderate risk for severe thunderstorms has been issued by SPC for eastern parts of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and western Missori. Meanwhile, Saskatoon is seeing the snow slowly melt away as temperatures continue to increase, leaving the shortest winter ever behind. The lighting map is indicating that strikes are being recorded along the Manitoba/USA/Ontario borders, with some convection on radar even at this hour of day.
If that's not a thunderstorm....

That looks like a pretty strong cell with those red colours in there. It looks like the city of Brandon is going to see the first thundershower of the year on the Canadian prairies.
Earliest Spring Thunderstorms Ever?
This just in....
Weak convective cells have emerged over south-east Saskatchewan and it looks like the lighning map is indicating the most northerly strikes are coming closer to Canada today. SPC has a huge "slight risk" area drawn for the plains on Thursday which may indicate a very active day over a wide spread area. A little more heat and all this moisture will make for an interesting spring storm season. The earliest severe thunderstorm in recent memory was on April 19, 2004.
